Punchong ware was made (1392 - 1593) throughout central and southern Korea. After the Japanese invasion (1593-98) led by warrior Hideyoshi. All Korean potters were captured by Japan. In Japan, Punchong ware is also know as “Mishima” and highly respected in the ceramics world.

When I first encountered this “ugly charming” bowl, despite the unsuccessful firing and minor restoration, it has such a wonderful feel when handled. Since then, it has become part of my daily utensils. I was told by one of my clients that the inlaid pattern of the white slip reminded her of the Tibetan Mandala? (See “Korean Pottery and Porcelain of the Yi Period”, illustration by Gompertz, edition 1968, pl 9b, p. 26 for description of this ware).
